Attack on Awami League Rally: Are We Reaping What We Sowed?
Emanur Rahman

This is undoubtedly an appalling incident but why is everyone so outraged? Why so surprised? I am neither outraged nor surprised. In fact I will go so far as to say that I am grateful that for once those who are responsible for getting us to this new era of violence are actually victims themselves. You may find my comments harsh even disgusting, but thats a fact.

Politicians like Hasina, Khaleda, Ershad, Zia etc. have made life cheap in Bangladesh. They've made it a numbers game. In the past it was always innocent bystanders, the poor and the gullible who were caught up in the violence. Now, this beast that they have reared looks set to finally reach them as well.

There is a simple fact here. What we are witnessing today is the logical conclusion of the way in which our ruling elite has administered the country since Independence. Until they change their ways, it will get worse. However, their greed and corruption means that they will not, in which case I will continue to welcome the body count of their number.

I have prayers for the innocent party workers who have lost their lives in this tragedy. I have no prayers for the party high command or their brigand leader.I am unapologetic and refuse to be politically correct about this. We are supposed to condemn it, abhor acts of violence etc. I am sorry, its party leaders who were targetted and killed and I will not condemn it. You reap what you sow in this life and its time that they did as well. It does not mean that I support the gunmen. It means only that I see a whirlwind of violence that all politicians have whipped up over time and now, they cannot control it - if it kills them in the process, there will be some justice at least for the millions of ordinary Bangladeshis who have died at the hands of their greed, corruption, nepotism, stupidity and incompetence.

I have always said that our future will begin when this ruling generation is dead, buried and forgotten. Perhaps finally, their sins will consume them sooner rather than later? If so, then I welcome it.
