Shah Abdul Hannan - A Simple Man with Great Accomplishment
Mohammad Mazibur Rahman

Some people are great by birth but some become great by virtue of their good work and contribution to human society. Shah Abdul Hannan belongs to the second group. I did not have any opportunity to listen to him physically attending in his lectures but I listened his speech on Bangladesh television program in my college life. It will be the job of the scholars and of the historian to evaluate Mr. Hannan's work and thought and I am confidant they will be doing it. It would be an injustice on Janab S Hannan if I make any comment on his work and thought not being a scholar. Being his humble admirer and reader of his work I like to say, "Mr. Hannan is a simple man with great accomplishment". We know Shah Hannan by name but a very few of us know him and his work very closely. His autobiography informed us many of the untold stories and works of his life, we are thankful to him for presenting this excellent gift.

Shah Hannan is a man of wisdom and intellect. Simplicity adorns his life, his sincerity, loyalty and sacrifice for the Islamic movement is unprecedented in the contemporary time.

His sublime manner, gentle and humanistic approach is so praiseworthy even his enemies appreciated that. Fatemollah, pseudonym of Hasan Mahmud is very well known in the electronic media tried to demean Mr. Hannan with his all energy and efforts, provocating him with jokes etc. But brother Hannan argued with him with wisdom and patience never pursued the path of conflict and ultimately he won. Fatemollah admitted he addressed Shah Hannan with "Sir" not for mockery but because of respect and Shah Hannan deserved it. In a mail Mr. Mollah admitted that he heard nothing but good words from his bureaucrat father about Mr. Hannan.

Brother Hannan mentioned in his biography that instead of being a student of Dhaka medical college he took admission to Jagannath College because of the request of his leader. I would say that you did not loose anything rather gained a lot and benefited others and us in many ways. Being a doctor you could cure the ailment of sick people but pursuing the general education you did tremendous services and helped to cure the diseases of the minds and thoughts of many secularists and Islamophobic intellectuals of our country.

Shah Abdul Hannan is still working day and night relentlessly to convey the true message of the Deen of Allah swt with wisdom both at home and abroad through electronic media. His sincerity is unthinkable and unparalleled, I sent an article for review most likely it was 5 AM in Bangladesh time and I received his response in ten minutes, May Allah swt bless him and reward him for all his good work and enable him to continue his service for the cause of His Deen. The legacy of brother Hannan will be everlasting in the history of Bangladesh specially his services to the Islamic movement, for strongly backing democracy, practice of tolerance in politics. He had opportunity to amass wealth and enjoy luxuries but he maintained a simple and honest life. He attained success in all aspects of his life.

Our nation owe to Shah Hannan for his contribution in Banking sectors and economic prosperity because of the introduction and reformation of VAT. Many educated young people got the opportunity to work and earn money-driving taxicab in Dhaka city because of his effort to include this item l in the budget and its final approval in the Parlament while he was in NBR.

Islamic movement needs many magnanimous Intellectuals like Shah Hannan who is even honored and being respected by his political opponents despite his different thoughts and practices. Life is short but art is long, brother Hannan will live for time immemorial through his good works and contributions to our nation and to the Islamic movements. We belong to Allah and to Him we will return, all of us one day will meet with Allah swt even it is heart breaking for us. Rabindranath Tagore echoed in one of his poem, "Jatay Nahee dibo hai tabu jathay ditay hay tabu chalay jay." (We will not allow you to go but still no escape from allowing you to go and then you go). Brother Hannan is educating and working among the intellectuals but I am worried in his absence, who will be the torchbearer of his thoughts and lights!

His honesty is beyond any question and doubt; he was always steadfast and never compromised on his principle. Such an honest high official is rare in our society. Our nation should give birth to more intellectuals like Janab Shah Hannan. May Allah swt extends his life and give him good health to serve for His cause and for our nation as well as for the ummah.
