Khalid bin Al-Waleed

Yousuf Masud

Islam is not only a religion, but a way of life, as we have learned and heard many times throughout our lives. It is based off of the revelations that the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) was given and what he educated from them. Behind the prophet were his companions, a handful of some of the greatest men our world will ever know. Some we know and  have learned much about, Abu Bakr as Siddiq (R.A) and Omar ibn Al Khattab (R.A), two examples to name a few. But many others, we may have only heard of, or maybe have never known of at all. This essay will be about Khalid bin Al- Waleed (R.A), one of the most remarkable generals of Islamic history, as well as a very devout Muslim, and a close friend of the prophet.

At first Khalid bin Al- Waleed's (R.A) intentions were to kill the Prophet, as was the intentions of Omar ibn Al Khattab (R.A) at a time. He agreed with the Chiefs of the Quraish, and wanted to stop the spread of the Islamic message. Like many other tribal leaders, he was a war hero and respected leader, who defended his people as well as his pagan faith. He fought against the Muslims in the Battle of Badr, and was astounded by the defeat and fatal losses. He conquered in the Battle of Uhud, without having the knowledge that it was because soldiers had disobeyed the orders of the Prophet. He again went to attack the Prophet and his followers in Medina, but was surprised when he learned that they had dug an immense trench, preventing him to attack and having to retreat in disaster after a fortnight. After a course of many years of war and ignorance, Khalid bin Al- Waleed (R.A), finally realized that his attempts were useless and decided to submit to Allah.

Khalid bin Al- Waleed (R.A) turned out to be a wise commander when the Romans decided to put an end to the message of Islam. In a battle after the three commanders had gotten killed, they elected Khalid as the commander and through his military prowess he avoided total defeat, and returned to Medina with few casualties. After returning, Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) named Khalid the Sword of Allah. In another battle the Muslims conquered Mecca, with Khalid bin Al- Waleed (R.A) as the military chief they entered the city and destroyed the idols and freed the people from the oppression. After the Muslims completed Hajj in Mecca for the first time, and returned to Medina, the Prophet fell very ill and soon passed away, leaving his companions, including Khalid (R.A) to carry on the message.

After the death of the prophet, there were people who started claiming they were prophets sent from Allah. Khalid (R.A) had to guide the Muslim army, which was weak at the time, and get rid of these false prophets. After he completed his first objective, Abu Bakr commanded him to attack the Persians, a task which was difficult since the Persians were a major power of the time. As an expert tactician, he overpowered them with his 12,000 soldiers. Later he was appointed to lead the army, to fight against the Romans and push them back, with only 36,000 soldiers. His strategy in the battlefield caused the Roman troops to flee from the battlefield. What made him a true soldier of Islam was that during the battle, Abu Bakr had died and the new Caliph, Omar ibn Al Khattab (R.A) had dismissed him of his duties. After the battle Abu Ubaidah bin Al- Jarrah had been promoted to the position of general of the Muslim army.

After Khalid bin Al- Waleed (R.A) had passed away, Omar ibn Al Khattab had said, "Never time will bring another man like Khalid." There is much from what we can learn from him. His first intentions were to rid the world of the prophet, but later his intentions became pure and were to rid the world of the enemies of the prophet. He showed the courage and leadership that all Muslims need to show. He was not only a pious Muslim, but was also compassionate with his Muslim brothers. That is why Khalid (R.A) was named the Sword of Allah and was an extraordinary general of Islam.
