I passed from BUET in 1994 and was a victim of terrorism during my
days in BUET (1988 to
1994). When I started my class in BUET, it has a cool & quiet
campus. But unfortunately, I left the BUET campus with an extremely
bad impression.
Question is how BUET has turned to a campus of terror and why it
happened. During my days in BUET lots of rooms were burnt and destroyed
(at least "four times") by the "BUET student-turned-terrorists"
who were known to all. Approximate dates of those incidents were:
31st Dec 1991, 6th Feb 1993, 27th May 1994 and 30th June
1994. The names of terrorist were also given to the BUET authority
with proofs. But the BUET authority did not evaluate those incidents
in a judicial manner.
You will understand the mentality of the BUET authority if you go
through some of the "reactions" of them. Firstly I went to the then
director of Students Welfare (DSW) Dr. Kurny, he told me: "why is
your room burnt? It's proved that you are a terrorist!" According
to Dr. Kurny's theory "Sabikunnahar Sony (was killed four days before)
should also be a terrorist too, not Togor or Muki". Secondly, I
met with Dr. Murtoza (Civil Eng. Dept.), he became very angry and
misbehaved with me; before I had no idea that a human being can
behave like that!!! Thirdly, I contacted Dr. Nazrul Islam (Mech.
Dept., who later served as the VC of Khulna University during Awami
league period.); he tried to convince me: "those incidents are normal,
why you worry about that?" Fourthly, I had a meeting with the then
VC Dr. Shahjahan; he also behaved like a UN diplomat. Fifthly, I
met with all the hall provosts and the head of the departments,
everyone behaved like a politician.
Basically the BUET-Terrorism is patronized by the BUET authorities.
Some proofs are as follows:
a) After each incident I saw the terrorists were laughing with Dr.
Kurny (Mat. Eng. Dept). In 1991 I went to VC's office and was astonished
to see the meeting of the terrorists (who burned the rooms) with
VC.
b) In 1992 some terrorists of DU burned couple of cars of some BUET
teachers. Those terrorists also had good relations with some BUET-Terrorists.
Many times I saw those BUET-Terrorists to come out from the apartment
of Dr. Nazrul Islam; those BUET-Terrorists used to take "Alauddin-Sweets"
in his guest room.
c) In 1993 prior to EUCSU election some terrorists burned a banner
and leaflets in front of Titumir Hall provost, but the provost told
nothing to those terrorists (Titumir Hall Residents); unfortunately
he told the victims: "it is common in election !!!"
d) In 1994 30th June, some terrorists burned 30 rooms of different
halls and the gang leader "NILA" (President Of Chatra Front) was
trapped in Sohrawardi Hall as the guard closed the main gates; but
the provost and BUET authority did not take any action against her!!!
It is 100 percent true that no student enters BUET as a terrorist.
Compared to other universities in Bangladesh, BUET has a compact
campus and a different educational environment and it is very easy
to identify the BUET-Terrorists and keep them in check. But we need
to find out the origin of terrorism and should take the necessary
actions against the root cause. If we select the "tiger" to guard
the "goats", that will be of no use!!!.
